Choosing the Right Profession in WoW
If you are thinking about what your professions should be in WoW, you will need to think about what you want to gain from your professions. In the World of Warcraft you will be able to choose two main professions and all three of the secondary professions. The main professions can vary in how they are used and what they can provide a player and in some cases this can make all the difference.
We present here some basic information to guide your professions choice. If you want the best Professions info, and learn how to max your profession level quickly and easily, you must look into Dugi's Profession and Gold Guide. It is simply the best in this area.
The Gatherer
Three main professions called Mining, Skinning and Herbalism are known by WoW players as the “gathering” professions. These professions are easy to level up in skill and are designed to allow players to gather materials in the World of Warcraft areas. These materials are not useful on their own but many people choose two gathering professions for their character in order to make money as they level up. Other players may not have all the materials they need to level up their own professions so they purchase these materials at very reasonable prices. Players with two gathering professions are often regarded as the money makers of WoW.
The Raider
Players who aim to achieve the level cap (currently level 80 but soon to be 85 on the release of the next expansion Cataclysm), will often also choose to take part in endgame game content. This means entering high level raid instances which contain end game bosses with the best loot available in the game. The raider will often spend a lot of money on repairs but doesn’t have that much time to make money from gathering professions. The raider will ideally choose two boosting professions such as Jewelcrafting, Leatherworking, Tailoring, Enchanting, Blacksmithing, Alchemy, Inscription and Engineering. Each of these main professions provide certain benefits to the player using them. For example, Leatherworkers gain an extra powerful bracer enchant unobtainable by players with other professions as well as cheap leg armour enchants to boost their stats without costing too much. Good combinations of professions for raiders are those that allow the player to maximise their stats and retain flexibility. Many players who previously had Skinning and Leatherworking have given up their gathering profession once they had enough skill in their Leatherworking. They then level up an alternative profession such as Blacksmithing (+ 2 sockets on gear) or Jewelcrafting (+3 Dragon’s Eye gems). When you compare the Dragon’s eye gems which have superior stats to any other gem to the critical strike bonus from Skinning you can see they provide roughly the same bonus however, the gems allow the player to invest the extra bonus into whatever stat they most need at the time and not just critical strike rating.
The Socialite
The Socialite player is more laid back about what professions they choose. Unlike the gatherer they don’t just want to make money, they want something much more interesting while they level up their character. However, they are also not interested in maximise their stats as they prefer non-endgame content or casual raiding experiences so having two key professions isn’t necessary. These players choose one gathering profession and one key profession based on their character class and what gear they can wear. Commonplace choices include:
- Skinning + Leatherworking (Hunters, Druids, Shamans and Rogues)
- Mining + Engineering (Most Classes)
- Mining + Blacksmithing (Death Knights, Warriors, Paladins)
- Herbalism + Alchemy (Priests, Druids, Mages, Warlocks, Shamans)
- Herbalism + Inscription (Priests, Druids, Mages, Warlocks, Shamans)
- Mining + Jewelcrafting (Most Classes)
- Enchanting + Tailoring (Mages, Priests, Warlocks)
