Obtaining the Insane in the Membrane Achievement

Insane in the Membrane Achievement

The very hardest reputation-based achievement to obtain at present in the World of Warcraft, this achievement rewards you with what some see as the coolest title in the game: ‘The Insane’. It certainly is no small achievement, as you will require some serious reputation grinding with factions some people haven’t even heard of! In total you will need to get exalted with seven different factions to get this title as well as honored with an eighth. You will need exalted reputation with the four neutral goblin towns Gadgetzan, Everlook, Booty Bay and Ratchet as well as three other obscure factions: Shen’dralar, Darkmoon Faire and Ravenholdt. You will also need to have been honored with the Bloodsail Buccaneers.

Buccaneers vs. Goblins

Most people go for the Bloodsail Buccaneers before the goblin cities, and there appears to be some debate over whether or not you actually need to keep the reputation at honored for the achievement. Some people have found that they still get credit as long as they have once been honored even if they aren’t by the time the goblin cities are exalted. However, to be safe you should probably try and keep honored status with them.

In order to become honored with the Bloodsail, you will need to grind NPCs in a town such as Booty Bay. If you are a rogue or have one with you, the Booty Bay Bruisers should also have their pockets picked as they can drop Heavy Junkbox which is necessary for Ravenholdt reputation (in fact, all mobs of the correct level should also have their pockets picked to save these up as you will need an awful lot of them!). Once you reach the required reputation level you can also obtain a quest which provides more rep and also the title ‘Bloodsail Admiral’ as an added benefit!

After you reach honored with the Bloodsail Buccaneers, it is time to grind rep with the goblins again, but since it is best to do it without hurting your Bloodsail rep, you will need to complete special quests in Dire Maul which provide rep with all the goblin towns at once. One of the quests is Free Knot! You will need to obtain the Gordok Shackle Key as a random drop before you can complete this one and get your 350 reputation. The other quest The Gordok Ogre Suit is also repeatable and awards 250 rep points the first time you complete it and 75 rep points each time after, although for this you will also need lots of Runecloth and Rugged Leather. Dire Maul is also where you will find the Shen’dralar so you should start to grind your rep with them at this point.

Ravenholdt and Shen’dralar

Two of the most obscure factions in World of Warcraft (with the exception of Wintersaber Trainers of course!) Ravenholdt and Shen’dralar are also the two factions that prove most difficult to gain reputation with. For Shen’dralar you will need to complete around 84 of the repeatable quests they offer for handing in special librams along with reagents to be made into arcanums (these were the only head enchants available in vanilla WoW). The three drops you will need from Dire Maul for these quests are Libram of Focus, Libram of Rapidity, and Libram of Protection. You will need a healthy supply of Large Brilliant Shards and Pristine Black Diamonds to go along with these librams for handing in.

In order to get your reputation up with Ravenholdt, you will need to know a rogue. Although you can get reputation gains all the way up to revered just by grinding low level Syndicate mobs in Arathi Highlands, beyond this point the only way to advance is to hand in Heavy Junkbox in stacks of five. You will need somewhere in the region of 1400 of these to get all the way to being exalted.

Darkmoon Faire

The main obstacle in grinding reputation with this faction is their availability. You can only gain reputation with Darkmoon Faire when the faire is actually on. When it is there are a range of quests available that will allow you to hand in different items for reputation up to a certain point. After this though, the only way to increase your reputation is to hand in decks of cards. All decks at level 60 or higher award 350 reputation points per hand in, but can also be very expensive (although you can sell the trinkets you obtain from them now that they are no longer bind-on-pickup). Probably the easiest and cheapest way to grind reputation with Darkmoon Faire is to get a scribe to make a ton of the lower level decks out of cheap herbs and hand them in for 25 rep each.
